Timbers for building

Hemlock and white pine have framed barns in Central New York for two hundred years. We saw timbers to your dimensions for posts, beams, pergolas, sheds and timber-frame projects.

Big timbers dry slowly from the outside in, so most structural work uses them green or air-dried and lets them season in place. Tell us how the piece will be used and we’ll tell you what to expect.

Mantels and hearth pieces

A mantel is the one beam everyone looks at. We saw them with a live edge or square, in walnut, oak, ash, pine or hemlock. A mantel over a fireplace lives in dry heat, so it should be kiln-dried first or it will check and twist on the wall.

What to tell us

Length, width and height of each piece, the species you have in mind, and whether it’s structural or decorative. We’ll tell you what we can cut from what’s in the yard, or what log we’d need.

Work it out

How much wood have you got, and what will it cost to dry?

Measure a board, get its board feet, then see what a run through the kiln comes to.

Board foot calculator

length × width × thickness ÷ 144 · in inches
Board feet
8 BF

96 in × 12 in × 1 in ÷ 144 = 8 board feet. For live-edge slabs, measure the width at the narrow end.

$0.10 / BF / day
Per day
$0.80
Drying cost
$6.40

8 BF × $0.10 = $0.80 a day × 8 days. Actual days depend on species, thickness and how wet the wood starts, so treat this as an estimate.
