Box elder · sawn and dried in Central New York
Box elder slabs with red flame
Box elder is a maple, light and creamy, but the best logs carry streaks of red and pink running through the grain. No two pieces look alike.

Where the red comes from
The red is the tree’s own response to injury: a pigment it lays down in the wood. It shows up unpredictably, so you don’t know how much flame a log has until it’s opened on the mill. When it’s there, it’s the showpiece of whatever it goes into.
What it’s good for
Small tables, shelves, charcuterie boards, turning blanks and accent pieces. It’s softer than hard maple, so it’s happier on a wall or a coffee table than as a kitchen work surface.
The red can fade toward brown under strong sun. A finish with UV protection and a spot out of direct light keep it bright.
